Policy Match does not upload your ratings, political preferences, notes or match results. You do not need an account.

This privacy policy covers the Policy Match iPhone and iPad app and this website. The app is operated by Nick Cottier. Privacy questions: policymatch@icloud.com.

What stays on your device

The app stores your policy ratings, notes and preferences locally. Match results are calculated on-device. There is no app-operated cloud database, iCloud sync, advertising SDK or behavioural analytics SDK. We do not receive or sell your political responses, and do not use them for advertising or political targeting.

Policy downloads and external links

The app downloads public policy data from GitHub Pages. These requests do not include your ratings, notes or match results. Like other internet connections, they expose connection information, including your IP address, to the hosting provider. GitHub states that it logs and stores visitors’ IP addresses for security purposes. See GitHub Pages data collection and GitHub’s privacy statement.

You can turn off automatic downloads in About → Policy updates. Manual checks still contact the service. Opening a source link or a support/privacy page contacts the relevant website, whose privacy practices apply.

Backups, deletion and lost devices

The app does not provide an account-based restore service. Your operating system may include app data in a device backup according to your settings; this is separate from app-operated iCloud sync. If the app is deleted or your device is lost, damaged or reset, your responses may be permanently lost. Recovery depends on whether a usable device backup contains them.

You can clear individual ratings or remove all ratings and notes using About → Clear all responses. To manage copies in device backups, use Apple’s backup controls. We cannot access or recover your local responses.

Support messages

If you email support, you choose to share your email address, message and any attachments with Nick Cottier and the email providers involved in delivery. They are used to respond to your request and investigate the reported issue, not to build a political profile. Share only what is needed. You may request access, correction or deletion of support correspondence by emailing the address above. Relevant records may be retained where needed to resolve an ongoing issue or meet legal obligations.

TestFlight and Apple services

If you use a TestFlight version, Apple processes beta-testing information under its own terms. Apple may make crash reports, usage information and feedback you submit available to the developer. Screenshots or feedback can contain anything you choose to include, so avoid sharing private political responses. See TestFlight and privacy. Device backups and optional Apple diagnostics are governed by your Apple settings and Apple’s privacy terms.

This website

These pages do not include advertising, visitor analytics scripts, a contact form or app-response collection. Hosting and delivery services may process technical request information, such as IP addresses, for delivery, security and reliability. This website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub logs visitors’ IP addresses for security as described in the GitHub privacy links above. We do not combine website traffic with your political responses.

Changes and contact

If the app’s data handling changes, this page will be updated with a new effective date. For a privacy question or concern, contact policymatch@icloud.com. You may also contact the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
