Aurora Heads Up combines auroral activity with local darkness and cloud. It gives you a practical reason to look up, while keeping uncertainty clear.
Common questions
How far ahead can the app forecast?
The three-night outlook is for planning. The short-term aurora view is most useful around 30–90 minutes ahead. Recheck close to the time because solar-wind conditions and local cloud can change quickly.
What do Active, Promising and Look south or north mean?
They are plain-language summaries of the available forecast data at your place. They are not a guarantee that an aurora will be visible. Darkness, cloud, local light pollution and the strength of the display all affect what you may see.
Why is cloud or forecast data unavailable?
WeatherKit or NOAA data can occasionally be late, incomplete or temporarily unavailable. Pull down or use Refresh forecast after a few minutes. The app leaves missing information unknown instead of guessing.
Will every alert arrive?
No. iOS controls when background refresh runs, so aurora alerts are best effort. Keep notifications and Background App Refresh enabled, and open the app periodically so it can refresh its data.
Does it work outside New Zealand?
Yes. Aurora Heads Up supports places in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Use the location row to choose the place whose sky you want to check.
How does the seven-day trial work?
Every feature is available for seven days. Afterwards, one lifetime purchase unlocks the app. There is no subscription. Use Restore Purchases after reinstalling or moving to another iPhone signed in to the same Apple ID.
How do I change or reset the hero image?
Tap the small information button on the hero image. Choose a photo from your library, or restore the default Pukekohe aurora photograph at any time.
